Best known for his work in Malayalam films, Mohanlal is an actor, producer, singer, writer and distributor from South India. He started his career with an anti-hero role at the age of 20 and has been rated as one of the most talented actors in India, for his choice of roles ranging from light-hearted comedy to serious heroes or villainous ones.
His talent has been recognized nationally with the Padma Shri award that he bagged in 2001. He has also won four Indian National Film Awards - two Best Actor Awards, one Special Jury Award for acting, and one Award for Best Film as producer along with six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor. In 2009, he became the first actor to be given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India. In 2010, he received an honorary doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala. In 2013, his talent as a cricketer was proven as he captained the Kerala Strikers team in Celebrity Cricket League (CCL).
His business ventures include production and distribution companies Pranavam Arts and Pranamam; Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments, a Malayalam film distribution company; Vismaya Max, a film post-production studio and a college for dubbing artists at Kinfra Film and Video Park, Trivandrum.
Apart from his film personality, Mohanlal also owns restaurants and packaged spices businesses under the name Mohanlal's Taste Buds and is a partner and director at Uniroyal Marine Exports, a major Kozhikode-based seafood export company.
Mohanlal is the Goodwill Ambassador of AIDS awareness campaign for 'Kerala AIDS Control Society', Handloom textiles in Kerala and Kerala State Athletics.
Marking the 25th anniversary of Mohanlal's film career, a week-long celebration and a stage show was held in Trivandrum by his fans and friends. The proceeds from the stage show were donated to charity.
He has been chosen as the 'Most Popular Keralite' in a survey conducted by Deccan Chronicle.

Mohanlal underwent 18 months of 'escape artist' training under Magician Gopinath Muthukad and planned to perform a stunt called 'Burning Illusion' in Trivandrum. However, this was cancelled later on allegations that it is a dangerous act.
