Neti Gandhi (1999)

Evocative and provocative, this socially relevant saga follows the fluctuating fortunes in the life of Gandhi, a fearless man with a terrible childhood. After receiving an invitation to hoist the flag on Independence Day, a corrupt politician arrives drunk and misbehaves with his mother. Later on, Gandhi's mother is paraded in the nude, and unable to bear the humiliation, his parents die.

Vasu is a small-time criminal who has a team of underlings, who earned money through stealing and thievery. He lives in a temple that everyone stops entering into, because they are afraid of him. One day, a bold and beautiful young woman, Bharathi enters the temple and gives him a piece of her mind. Vasu falls in love with her and forcibly marries her.

However, Bharathi is disgusted by him. She asks him to first change his ways and commit at least three good deeds before coming to her as her husband. Slowly, Vasu realises the error of his ways and returns to being Gandhi. Now, as Gandhi, he must help to the people in need, who are being exploited and tterrorised by powerful forces, so that he can become worthy of being Bharathi's husband. Will he succeed in his mission?
