The story revolves around the characters in the Hindu Epic "The Mahabharata" and is set in Dwaraka, the hometown of Lord Krishna. Arjuna's son Abhimanyu falls in love with Balarama's daughter Sasirekha. When the Pandava's lose their kingdom in the infamous game of dice to the Kaurava's, Balarama promises his daughters hand to Duryodhana's son, there by breaking the promise made to Subhadra(Abhimanu's mother and Balarama's sister). The rest of the movie is how Bhima's son Ghatotkacha helps the lovers unite with his magic.

The film's story is an adaptation of the folk tale Sasirekha Parinayam, which is in turn based on the epic Mahabharata.

This is the first ever South Indian film to gross over 2 crore rupees.

The movie had over 400 studio workers working - including light men, carpenters, and painters who had participated in the development of the film.

Director Reddy was meticulous with the pre-production and casting phases for which he took nearly a year to complete the process.

Rama Rao was initially reluctant to play the lead role but his portrayal of Krishna garnered acclaim and many similar roles in unrelated films.

Four of the songs in the movie were composed by S. Rajeswara Rao prior to his departure from the project which was unknown.
