Britain's Captain Jack Aubrey is a brash high-seas adventurer who maintains a strong bond with ship-surgeon Stephen Maturin. After conquering much of Europe already, Napoleon's forces have set their sights on taking Britain, so Aubrey and the crew of his ship, the HMS Surprise, take to the Pacific to intercept any attacking ships from the French fleet. When Aubrey eyes a renegade French super-frigate, the Surprise pursues, leading to an adrenaline-charged chase through the distant reaches of the sea. However, when his own ship is heavily damaged, he realises the task is not as easy as it seems.

Trivia:
After learning to play violin for the movie, Russell Crowe referred to it as that hardest thing he'd ever done for a film.

Despite the book being set in 1812, the movie is set 7 years earlier. This is because the writers didn't wanted the enemy of the piece to be France rather than the United States, England at the time having declared war against Napoléon Bonaparte.

The cast attended a two-week boot camp where they were taught the ropes and what to do on board a frigate, including canon handling and basic sword skills.

This is the first movie to ever be filmed on the Galapagos Islands.
