This touching tale delves into concepts of poverty, accumulation of wealth, social status and family values to the struggles and sacrifices of Santhanam. Growing up as the eldest son of an impoverished widow, he sacrifices his childhood and education in order to food on the table for the family and provide for the education of his two younger brothers and younger sister. As an adult, he becomes a labourer still struggling to make ends meet, and lives on the verge of destitution with his wife and children, while his educated younger siblings lead luxurious life. When he seeks their help, they reject an insult him. Will Santhanam find a way to bring his family out of the slums? Can he find a way to succeed in life and prove his superiority to his younger siblings?
